RE: Activities in Yellowstone
There's tons of info on the NPS web site for Yellowstone. Here. For the kids, check out the junior ranger program at Madison. Also check out the Yellowstone Wildlife Map. This is an interactive map put together by Max Waugh, a wildlife photographer that spends a lot of time there.
No matter how much time you have, it won't be enough. Have a ball.
RE: Camper Hurt in BEAR Tussel
Scott,
Camping in a hard sided RV is perfectly safe as long as you follow some common sense rules. Always park next to someone that is tent camping. Better yet, camp inside the National Park. Most bears can't afford the entrance fee. Finally, if you insist on hiking in bear country, always go with someone that runs slower than you.
RE: Gulfport,ms
Gator,
Casino Magic had the one in Bay St. Louis as well as the one in Biloxi. The one in Biloxi was destroyed in the hurricane. Hollywood bought the casino and RV park in Bay St. Louis.
RE: Cabela's near Kearney and Omaha
The Cabela's at Sydney actually has an RV campground with elec, water and cable hookups and dump station. Very nice bathrooms, all sites are gravel, small play area (I think). $20/nite in winter, $25/nite in summer. As far as I know, the other stores have a parking area for RVs ala Wally World, but no formal campground.
RE: Class C Leveling System
I took my Class C to Camping World in Bowling Green, KY. They installed HWH Levelers, an in-motion Satellite Dish and and a backup camera in one day. They did a great job on everything. The price for the HWH system sounds about right.
RE: Storage Help
Don't know how wide a gap you are trying to bridge, but they make expandable shower curtain rods with rubber tips on each end. You just unscrew it in the middle and it expands until its tight against two walls. I use one in the back of my pickup to brace things to keep them from sliding around. You just keep unscrewing it until its tight against both sides of the truck bed. They expand to about 6 feet long.
RE: Retirement plan
After my Dad retired back in 1970, my folks started looking for someplace warm for the winters. They spent a couple of winters renting around Tampa but really didn't like the area. They finally bought a class C and started traveling in the winter with the idea of finding a permanent place to spend the winters. That way, they could move on if they were in an area that they didn't care for. They spent 3 or 4 years chasing across the southwest and southeast. They tried Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Alabama and Florida from Pensacola to Key Largo. They finally found an RV park near Titusville, FL that offered good weather, light traffic, nearby shopping and medical facilities and several golf courses. Just what they were looking for. They traded the Class C for a park model and spent the rest of their winters there.
My point here (wondering if I had one?) is that every place they visited they thought they were going to love, but didn't for a variety of reasons. By spending at least a month in every place they tried, they refined their list of likes/dislikes until they found the perfect spot for them.
RE: Mini Meals?
Generally, we all eat too much at a meal, according to the food police and it is up to each of us to decide on portion sizes. But on the rare occasion when I eat out at an expensive restaurant, I prefer to pay for the food and not the decorations on my plate. And PLEASE stop piling everything up in the middle of the plate. If I want to eat everything together, I'll ask them to throw it in a blender so I can drink it.
RE: My First Adventure
Using Street & Trips, I found 12 campgrounds within 25 miles of Route 1 between Medicine Hat and Winnepeg, a distance of 625 miles, and three of those are in either Medicine Hat or Winnepeg. I don't know if any of them have hookups. Following Rt 2 through Montana and North Dakota won't be a whole lot better. Only 22 between Cut Bank and Minot. Just be prepared to dry camp in rest areas if you have to.
Also, if you decide to go the Canada route, no handguns allowed, and no driving in Canada if you've ever had a DUI.
RE: Service Centers in Myrtle Beach
Ocean Lakes has an RV service center. They have mobile technicians that will come to you or you can take the unit there if needed.
RE: help with directions to Cinn. Reds stadium
Here's the directions from their web site. Directions. There is also a map of parking areas for the game.
PS - there are even directions coming from Kentucky if you miss it again. :)
RE: cabins at Black Hills South Dakota
I stayed at Happy Holiday 3 years ago. Nice folks running the place, but the layout is horrible. A wide main road, then very narrow roads off to each side at a 90 degree angle, followed by narrow sites off these roads, again at a 90 degree angle. The first site at each row end has a picnic table with a shelter over it, the full length of the site, then they park the Class As on the end of each row. The day I left, I had to pull thru 3 empty sites in front of me to get to an opening without Class As parked on the ends, so I could make the turn out in my Class C.
The Mt. Rushnore KOA has a much better layout and they have cabins, of course. I've not stayed ther, but I think Rafter J has cabins as well. Many folks on this forum have stayed there and rave about it. Both the KOA and Rafter J are much closer to Mt. Rushmore.
RE: 3 day weekend
Its kind of funny - before I retired, I looked forward to those three day weekends. Now I plan around them when traveling because of difficulty getting reservations, higher costs, crowds, etc.
RE: Something I don't know, but we should think about
I am single and have no living relatives. I do, however, have a very good friend that is a funeral director. Over the years, she has told me stories of people dying away from home and the difficulty of dealing with the particular state laws. With that in mind, I have pre-arranged and pre-paid for the whole thing. Everything is notarized and legal.
I urge all of you to think about doing this, no matter what your age. It takes away from the decisions that loved ones would have to make, puts the arrangements in the hands of the experts, and locks in the price. It also eliminates the fights that sometimes occur between those left behind.
RE: Where No RV is Allowed To Go: The Greenhorn Asks
One quick hint - If you are going to drive thru Canada, convert your feet & inches to Meters & Cms, both width and height, and your pounds to KGs. Also, your US Dollars to Canadian Dollars and Gallons to Liters. unless you just don't want to know how much you're paying for gas.
RE: East Coast to Alaska, anyone been?
First, since "the east coast" runs from northern Maine to Key West, give us an idea where Mendham is. I found one in New Jersey. Is that it?
Second, buy a copy of "The Mile Post". That will tell you everything you need to know about the Alaska Highway, which is the last 1500 miles of about a 4500 mile trip. It took me about 15 driving days each way from Cincinnati,OH to Anchorage,AK, doing about 300-350 miles each day, some shorter, some longer. On the Alaska Highway, you will run into construction delays, as they have a short season for road repairs.
Third, get a copy of a good mapping program. I use MS Street & Trips, but there are others. Then you will be able to pick out other places you want to visit on the way to or from. You may want to consider the Black Hills, Yellowstone and the Tetons. Or you might want to go through Canada with stops around Toronto, Thunder Bay, Winnepeg, Saskatoon, and Edmonton. Go out one way and back the other. One advantage to driving thru Canada - with the Canadian/US dollar conversion and gas in liters instead of gallons, you won't have any idea how much you're paying. :)
Once you figure out your route, PM me and I can tell you about the RV parks I stayed in between Edmonton and Anchorage.
Finally, start lurking in the "RVing in Canada and Alaska" forum. Lots of info there.
RE: Wilted lettuce
Here's a quick hint: Don't pour the cold vinegar into the bacon grease the minute you have removed the bacon. Let the oil cool down a bit. Scalding hot oil will pop all over the place. Don't ask me how I know this. :)
RE: Myrtle Beach Golf
My friends and I went for a week every year for about 20 years and still didn't play all the courses. Check out the Myrtle Beach Golf Association. They review all the courses and many of the restaurants. They don't pull any punches. If the course or restaurant stinks, they say so. From personal knowledge, I find them to be very accurate. Be sure to check out the "Inside Scoop" section.
